Italian public university improves records management and collaboration with Hyland's Alfresco platform

The University of Naples Federico II, with about 100,000 students and over 6,000 staff across many schools and administrative units, lacked an enterprise content management system and relied on paper records and an Oracle‑based protocol that didn’t support centralized document control. The university needed to digitize administrative files—everything from student applications to invoices retained for 15 years—and establish a central repository to improve indexing, search and cross‑department collaboration as part of a move toward a paperless environment.

UNINA selected Alfresco for its open architecture and scalability and developed the eDocumento application to serve as a content repository with version control, metadata, workflows and Oracle integration. Within months more than 3,000 employees were using the system, improving interoperability, document sharing and productivity; the university is rolling the platform out in phases, training more users and expanding features with the goal of managing the full document lifecycle in Alfresco.
