A Alfresco Case Study
DCNS, a global advanced-technology group that designs and supports submarines, surface combatants and civil nuclear and marine energy projects, needed a modern, scalable collaborative platform to replace obsolete document databases. The company wanted a user-friendly Web 2.0 solution that would enable cross-site sharing (tags, wikis, blogs), integrate with its information system (SSO, email, cross-search), support modular growth without large up-front investments, and empower users through self-service while covering at least 80% of needs out of the box.
After a proof-of-concept, DCNS selected Alfresco and implemented a single, modular installation developed with partner Sopra using agile methods and user feedback from a 10-person pilot. The platform now supports 900 active collaborative spaces (5–10 new ones requested weekly), a reference library (Dokeo) with 20,000 documents and 3,000–4,000 regular users (about 10,000 visits/month). The result: streamlined maintenance and licensing, higher personal and team productivity, increased innovation, and strong user adoption—especially among younger employees.
