Alfresco and Armedia Modernize Operations at USDA Food and Nutrition Service

The USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), which administers 15 nutrition programs on a roughly $100B budget and serves one in four Americans, faced fragmented, paper‑heavy processes and siloed ECM systems that slowed program administration and blocked modernization. Leadership prioritized a platform‑based approach to streamline document and records management, improve compliance, and enable better collaboration across the agency.

Armedia implemented the Alfresco Digital Business Platform as a unified solution, consolidating document management, electronic recordkeeping, and workflow apps (including MEMS, RFS, and the SNAP Policy Wiki) and integrating fraud case management. The result: two‑thirds of FNS staff now use the platform, policy lookup time fell from weeks to minutes, approvals and fraud investigations close faster, records meet electronic‑records mandates, and the agency gained efficiency, remote‑work capability, and freed office space.
