Washington County, Arkansas, needed to modernize its Planning Department’s outdated Microsoft Access database, which had become unsupported and inefficient. The department relied on the obsolete system and numerous spreadsheets to manage zoning, land use, permits, and related workflows, creating extra manual work and limiting productivity. Vendor Alexander Open Systems (AOS) was brought in to help address the challenge.

Alexander Open Systems developed a customized SQL-based database program tailored to Washington County’s needs and owned by the county for easier in-house maintenance. The new solution streamlined routine tasks and improved reporting, cutting the average time for an administrative lot split from 45 minutes to 15 minutes and reducing property notification preparation from two hours to 30 minutes. AOS also helped reduce human error and delivered a more sustainable platform for the department.
