The University of Alberta's Civil and Environmental Engineering department faced the challenge of screening about 30 applicants for a highly specialized interdisciplinary Ph.D. role, a manual process that was time-consuming and risked overlooking qualified candidates whose relevant expertise was not obvious from their CVs alone. To address this, they used interviews from vendor Alex AI.

The solution involved Alex AI creating a tailored interview and scoring rubric based on the job description, then conducting interviews with all applicants. This process identified two strong candidates who had been absent from the faculty's initial shortlist; both were advanced to the next stage. Three of the faculty's four original selections were also top-ranked by Alex AI, resulting in a stronger, broader shortlist for the specialized role.
