QAnon Conspiracy Theorists Target Wayfair In Disinformation Campaign

Wayfair was targeted in July 2020 by a viral QAnon disinformation campaign that falsely accused the company of child trafficking, using product SKUs and social posts to fuel claims and driving doxxing of employees and coordinated attempts to short the stock. Alethea was engaged to detect, monitor and mitigate the spread of this disinformation across Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, 4chan and other platforms.

Alethea mapped the cross‑platform campaign, produced a detailed timeline and actionable intelligence, and quantified engagement (for example, the original tweet amassed about 1.5K retweets and 2.2K likes, and CEO Niraj Shah’s mentions rose from 126 in June to roughly 12,000 between July 1–15), while documenting removals of some 4chan threads and ongoing posts into August. By delivering monitoring, analysis, and mitigation guidance, Alethea helped Wayfair understand the scope of the attack, prioritize protections for employees and leadership, and inform response actions to protect brand reputation and operations.
