Case Study: Randolph-Macon College achieves instant, campus-wide emergency notification with Alertus Technologies

The Need for Instant Emergency Notification

Randolph-Macon College, a private liberal-arts campus in Ashland, VA with about 1,450 students, needed an instant, campus-wide emergency notification system because of its proximity to I-95 and a nearby train line and because opt-in SMS/email alerts left coverage gaps. To fill that gap the college implemented Alertus Desktop Notification from Alertus Technologies (via the Alertus Desktop Donation Initiative) alongside its existing e2campus SMS/email service.

Alertus Technologies’ Desktop solution was integrated with e2campus to deliver pop-up alerts to roughly 1,200 college-owned PCs and laptops—waking machines and showing messages in seconds—creating multiple notification overlays. The combined Alertus/e2campus system enabled real-time evacuations during a construction-related gas-line rupture, produced visible, simultaneous alerts during tests, and is being expanded with Alertus LED marquees to improve coverage and accessibility.
