Case Study: Rochester Institute of Technology achieves campus-wide, redundant emergency notification with Alertus Technologies

Providing Comprehensive Coverage and Proactive Protection

Rochester Institute of Technology, a 1,300‑acre suburban campus in Rochester, NY with 16,773 students and 237 buildings, needed an integrated emergency notification solution after the Virginia Tech tragedy revealed gaps in timely communication. The university selected Alertus Technologies, deploying Alertus Alert Beacons and Alertus Desktop Notification to extend coverage to faculty, staff, students, parents and people with disabilities.

Alertus Technologies implemented a multilayer system of location‑based Alert Beacons (PoE plus FM redundancy, heated polycarbonate enclosures for harsh weather) and the Alertus Desktop client pushed to every campus computer, enabling targeted, seconds‑fast facility‑wide alerts and preset-driven sending for public safety. The deployment increased redundancy during power and network outages, kept devices working in snow, rain and ice, and substantially multiplied the campus’ ability to deliver concise, consistent emergency messages across the 1,300‑acre, 237‑building campus.
