Proactively Enhancing Campus-Wide Emergency Notification

Missouri Western State University, a 6,200‑student campus in St. Joseph, MO, sought to strengthen its emergency notification after seeing people ignore sirens and in light of rising campus incidents. The university selected Alertus Technologies and deployed the Alertus system—including Alertus Alert Beacons, text‑to‑speech modules, outdoor PA, VoIP classroom phones, strobes, cable TV override and SMS/email integration—to ensure alerts reach commuters, residents, faculty and staff indoors, outdoors and on personal devices.

Alertus Technologies provided a redundant, anchor‑technology solution (Ethernet + FM backhaul and battery backup) that covers 21 buildings across 700 acres: 100 Alert Beacons, 70 TTS speakers, 7 outdoor PAs, 130 VoIP classroom phones and 36 outdoor strobes, plus SMS and automated call trees. The system passed a suspicious‑package drill and proved its effectiveness during a real bomb‑threat evacuation—all buildings emptied promptly, messages were clear and campus constituents were notified quickly—demonstrating a reliable, campus‑wide reduction in communication gaps during emergencies.
