Meeting The Challenge of Emergency Notification Non-Reliant on Sound

Gallaudet University, the Washington, D.C. campus serving primarily deaf and hard-of-hearing students, needed an emergency notification system that did not rely on sound. After evaluating options, Gallaudet selected Alertus Technologies’ Alertus system—including wall-mounted Alert Beacons and Alertus Desktop Notification—to replace desktop- and email-only alerts that required people to be at a computer.

Alertus Technologies deployed the solution in phases (starting with 13 Alert Beacons) and integrated desktop alerts for redundancy, centralized dispatching, and location-based messaging. The Alertus system delivers facility-wide notifications in seconds, provides highly visible, ADA-compliant flashing lights and readable messages, enables targeted alerts to specific buildings, and has been expanded campus-wide with contributions from multiple departments.
