Queensland Health, which manages the public health system for the state of Queensland, faced a challenge in handling nearly two million annual referrals. Their process was inefficient, with a lack of standardized information that hindered the timely triage and delivery of patient care. To address this, they partnered with vendor Alcidion to create a state-wide Referral Management Solution, with Alcidion and its partner NextGate delivering the foundational Referral Service Directory (RSD).

The solution implemented by Alcidion and NextGate was the cloud-based RSD, which acts as a central directory of hospital services to guide General Practitioners in making appropriate referrals. This streamlined the referral process, modernized information sharing, and improved the quality of referrals. The measurable results include having 339 GP practices and nine Hospital and Health Services actively using the system, leading to more informed decision-making, enhanced workflows, and a foundation for a more connected health system.
