Early warning system helps clinicians reduce cardiac arrests and identify and respond to other potentially fatal conditions

Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust faced a challenge with its manual process for tracking patient deterioration, which required nurses to manually record vital signs and calculate early warning scores on paper, a time-consuming process prone to error. The trust partnered with vendor Alcidion to implement its Miya Observations (formerly Patientrack) electronic early warning system to improve patient safety and staff efficiency.

The Alcidion solution digitized the observation process using iPads, automatically calculating NEWS2 scores and providing real-time visibility of patient data. This resulted in a 75% reduction in cardiac arrests and saved nurses significant time, freeing up 13 hours per nurse each week for patient care. The trust also saves £60,000 annually on paper and has leveraged the Alcidion platform to develop a new, holistic pathway for identifying serious conditions like sepsis and AKI.
