Canterbury DHB, pioneers in adoption of digital patient observation and alert system

The Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) faced challenges with its paper-based patient observation system, which created risks by failing to consistently alert staff to patient deterioration and used approximately 40 different forms. To improve patient outcomes and safety, CDHB engaged vendor Alcidion to implement its Miya Observations and Assessments solution, aiming to digitize the process for better accuracy and efficiency.

Alcidion’s Miya solution provided a digital, mobile system for capturing a wide variety of observations and automatically calculating Early Warning Scores. This implementation by Alcidion led to significant results, including achieving 100% accurate EWS calculation, saving one minute per set of observations, and improving the detection of at-risk patients. These outcomes contributed to reduced unplanned ICU admissions, enhanced patient flow, and increased staff satisfaction.
