Case Study: Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust improves early AKI detection with Alcidion

A Alcidion Case Study

Preview of the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Case Study

A UK collaboration to detect a devastating condition

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a UK hospital trust, faced the significant challenge of acute kidney injury (AKI), a condition associated with tens of thousands of deaths annually and often preventable with early detection. The trust needed a solution to predict and identify patients at risk of developing AKI to enable timely clinical intervention. They partnered with vendor Alcidion, utilizing their Miya Observations (formerly Patientrack) platform and a predictive scoring model.

The solution implemented by Alcidion embedded a real-time predictive AKI scoring model into the trust's existing early warning system. This provided clinicians with a traffic light alert system (red, amber, green) for every patient's AKI status, enabling immediate intervention for at-risk patients. The results gave clinicians 100% visibility of patient AKI status, which is expected to prevent morbidity and mortality, reduce hospital stays, and help the trust achieve financial incentives for quality care.
