How a European E-Commerce Marketplace Gained Faster Value from Data with Alation

Allegro, the Poznań‑headquartered marketplace that connects more than 135,000 merchants with over 22 million monthly visitors, faced growing complexity as analytics spread across 20 business units (logistics, payments, pricing, etc.). Data and documentation were fragmented across Confluence, GitHub, Jira and pipeline code, making it hard to find owners, lineage, and trustworthy datasets—slowing onboarding, governance, and time‑to‑value as the company moved toward a domain‑driven, self‑serve data architecture.

Allegro adopted Alation Data Catalog as a central metadata hub, integrating table metadata, lineage and quality signals (from BigQuery, Tableau and other sources) via an API and enforcing documentation standards. The catalog improved discoverability, ownership/permission visibility, GDPR compliance and metadata quality, cut repeated producer queries, saved about 24 minutes per user per week, accelerated report/model/product creation and onboarding, and set the stage to scale catalog coverage to many more datasets.
