RyanAir Achieves Swift Session Handling with NCache

Ryanair, the low‑fare airline handling roughly 1.3 million daily visitors, 15.5 million page views and up to 30,000 orders per hour at peak, faced critical session‑storage and locking problems after moving its site to ASP.NET. Microsoft’s built‑in session state did not support Ryanair’s three‑site configuration (London, Dublin, Frankfurt), and aggressive robot traffic caused long session locks that exhausted network connections. Ryanair engaged Alachisoft and its NCache product to address these multi‑site session and high‑availability needs.

Alachisoft delivered a customized NCache deployment — including a “session site remembrance” feature and faster ASP.NET session‑locking behavior — across the three data centers, plus replicated caching for high availability. The result: transparent overflow between sites with no session loss or downtime, ability to take sites or servers offline for maintenance, and about a 90% reduction in internal bandwidth traffic versus prior approaches; the faster locking also eliminated long 30‑second wait stalls that were slowing the site.
