NCache lets Virgin HealthMiles scale their website traffic without requiring more database servers

Virgin HealthMiles, part of the Virgin Group, runs large-scale Pay-for-Prevention programs and a high-traffic ASP.NET web portal that saw daily visits and transactions grow about 200% since 2007. That growth caused the database tier to become a scalability bottleneck because many users repeatedly requested the same challenge and company data. To address this, Virgin HealthMiles turned to Alachisoft and its NCache distributed caching product.

Alachisoft implemented NCache as an out-of-process, distributed cache to hold commonly accessed data and portions of Virgin HealthMiles’ custom session object (with short, ~1-minute cache validity), greatly reducing repeated database queries. The solution eliminated the database bottleneck, allowed dynamic scaling of cache servers, and delivered a measurable ~30% optimization in database resource usage so the site could scale without continually adding more database servers.
