Congresso Em Foco helps Brazilians track $40bn in public spending with AKQA

AKQA partnered with Congresso Em Foco, an independent Brazilian digital news portal, to address the challenge of political corruption. Although Brazilians have a constitutional right to access information on how politicians spend public funds, the data was complex and difficult to monitor, allowing for an estimated $40 billion in corrupt spending annually.

The solution was the Transparency Card, a service that accesses government databases and sends real-time notifications about politicians' spending directly to citizens' phones. This approach simplified the visualization of complex data and turned every phone user into a watchdog. Implemented by AKQA, the initiative resulted in over 430,000 active cards in mobile wallets and the delivery of 20 million notifications, serving as a vital investigative resource for journalists.
