A Akka Case Study
Unomic, founded in 2006 in Busan, South Korea, provides the ELFiNOS cloud machine-learning platform for healthcare and manufacturing customers. Facing OEM pressures for faster, higher-quality, cost-controlled production, Unomic needed a way to integrate diverse, best-of-breed automation systems and reliably capture IIoT/edge data to feed ELFiNOS for real-time decision support and automated workflows.
Unomic rebuilt ELFiNOS around a reactive microservices architecture using Lightbend’s Akka Platform to stream edge data to the cloud with high scalability and low operational overhead. The change cut software development costs by 30% and hardware costs by 50%, enabled end-to-end factory automation (Doosan saw lead times cut by eight hours, defects halved from 1,000 to 500 ppm, and asset utilization rise from 56% to 70%), and supported a healthcare pilot that achieved >91% accuracy detecting dementia from MRI scans.
