Steering the Future with Scala and Play

Valtech, a global digital consultancy, was hired by a UK broadcaster to turn a vision for daily, easy-to-consume BI insight into reality for about 2,000 stakeholders. The brief required combining NoSQL and REST data, generating bespoke server-side SVG visualizations, and delivering responsive web and email channels on a fixed budget and tight schedule.

Valtech selected the Typesafe Platform—Scala and the Play framework—for its concise data-manipulation features, Java interoperability (for Apache Batik transcoding), and asynchronous scalability (Play futures, Akka, Spray). The team delivered the first release in 12 weeks: a responsive site and email pipeline producing SVG/JPEG visuals, scalable to the target users, with strong testability and high client satisfaction.
