SimpleBI wanted to make business intelligence affordable for smaller companies, but faced the challenge of building a SaaS product that hid the complexity of IBM Cognos while still providing an easy-to-use interface, secure user management, and a scalable architecture. To avoid choosing a platform that would limit future growth, SimpleBI worked with Akka to evaluate technologies and design a flexible solution for its BI service.

Akka implemented a future-proof architecture using the Typesafe Platform, including Play Framework and Scala, to power the web application and integrate with IBM Cognos, Active Directory/LDAP, and other back-end systems. The result was a simple, highly scalable product with faster development cycles, strong maintainability, and a compact web app of about 20 templates, enabling SimpleBI to launch a robust subscription-based BI service with much lower cost and complexity for customers.
