A Akana Case Study
A global multi-national bank sought new revenue channels and greater operational efficiency by opening its core banking services to partners and developers — a strategic move driven by a “disrupt or be disrupted” mindset and by regulatory requirements such as PSD2 and the UK Open Data Initiative that mandate API-based access to account and customer data.
The bank built an on‑premises API platform and Developer Network using the Akana Platform, implementing RESTful design, multi‑layer security, HSM‑backed cryptography, and a flexible developer portal. The platform went live in March 2016; an initial production API now enables real‑time supplier payments (replacing batch processing), improving customer experience and throughput, while meeting regulatory requirements and preparing for a public developer launch and a growing pipeline of APIs (branch locators, FX rates, etc.).
