A large Midwest healthcare provider began a full IT transformation in 2014 to become a unified, digital business capable of meeting rising regulatory requirements, industry-wide interoperability (including HL7 FHIR), consumer expectations for on‑demand access to records, and aggressive cost‑reduction targets. The organization faced extensive application and infrastructure rationalization and needed an API strategy to support meaningful use mandates, real‑time data exchange, and a customer‑centric approach to care.
The provider deployed the Akana Platform on‑premises and engaged Akana Professional Services to implement an HL7 FHIR server (based on HAPI FHIR). Key capabilities—API lifecycle management, automated DevOps, audit/logging, a policy‑driven gateway, branded developer portals, multi‑tenancy, and the FHIR server—were put into production in March 2016 and used to onboard REST, SOAP and MQ APIs. Governance recommendations were established, FHIR servers are being consolidated into a scalable, multi‑tenant enterprise instance, and the project has accelerated the organization’s digital transformation and time‑to‑market for API initiatives.
