Healthdirect Australia operates the National Health Services Directory (NHSD), a comprehensive, up‑to‑date national directory of doctors, pharmacies, hospitals and emergency services. The organisation needed to make this data available “anytime, anywhere” to many agency websites, embeddable widgets and mobile apps, but its back‑end exposed SOAP services and the growing number of lightweight REST consumers created a challenge to securely manage, mediate and monitor API traffic while meeting strict government security and compliance requirements.

Healthdirect republished its SOAP back end as REST APIs using Akana’s API Gateway, which mediates REST↔SOAP and XML↔JSON, enforces API keys and runtime authorization, supports CORS/JSONP, and provides monitoring. Deployed in a secured AWS private cloud and validated by third‑party testing, the solution enabled configurable embeddable widgets and mobile apps to consume NHSD data — delivering flexible, compliant and economical access across web and mobile since going live in August 2013.
