A Akana Case Study
A top-10 global insurer with about $22 billion in annual revenue—known for supplemental insurance sold primarily through employers, agents and brokers—faced slow, risky IT change cycles that limited product agility and market reach. Their legacy architecture (heavy ESBs and a large .NET monolith) required six months or more to build and deploy changes, preventing rapid product updates, streamlined buying for consumers and easier selling for agents, and contributing to only ~5% penetration of the global employee market.
The insurer selected the on‑premises Akana Platform (with a hybrid option) to re-architect toward microservices, expose and document APIs, automate partner/agent onboarding, centralize security via a gateway and move to DevOps/agile practices. As of March 2016 the API Gateway is in production, developer portal branding and partner onboarding workflows are in progress, and the organization plans to leverage Akana’s portfolio management and DevOps capabilities to speed deployments, reduce risk and accelerate market penetration.
