Doshisha University, a private Kyoto-based institution with over 28,000 students and multiple domestic and international campuses, faced limitations with its VPN-based remote access: it was hard to manage, required client software, granted overly broad network access, and struggled to support overseas staff and targeted CMS updates. The university needed identity- and role-based access controls that protected sensitive administrative systems while keeping resources widely available for faculty and students.
