Case Study: Doshisha University achieves VPN-free, Zero Trust remote access in 2 weeks with Akamai Technologies' Enterprise Application Access

A Akamai Technologies Case Study

Preview of the Doshisha University Case Study

University quickly configures remote work and adopts Zero Trust security best practices globally

Doshisha University, a private Kyoto-based institution with over 28,000 students and multiple domestic and international campuses, faced limitations with its VPN-based remote access: it was hard to manage, required client software, granted overly broad network access, and struggled to support overseas staff and targeted CMS updates. The university needed identity- and role-based access controls that protected sensitive administrative systems while keeping resources widely available for faculty and students.

Doshisha deployed Akamai Enterprise Application Access, a cloud-based, VPN-free identity-aware proxy that enables per-user application access via a web browser without additional client software. The solution was rolled out quickly—enabling a secure WFH environment and RDP access for staff in about two weeks—reduced management effort, lowered overseas connection load, improved per-user security controls, and delivered a more convenient, Zero Trust–aligned remote access experience.
