A Akamai Technologies Case Study
Standard Chartered Bank, a 150‑year‑old international bank focused on Asia, Africa and the Middle East, wanted to move from 55 regional sites to a single, centralized data center in Asia to cut costs and improve customer experience. The challenge was to deliver secure, high‑performance Internet banking worldwide without building regional data centers, while maintaining availability, resilience and strict security controls.
Partnering with Akamai’s global edge and Web Application Accelerator, Standard Chartered sped page delivery about fivefold and cut SSL multi‑step transaction times in Europe and the Americas from over 90 seconds to under 45 seconds (≈100% improvement), with ~25% gains in Asia; UAE transaction time fell from 171s to <25s and India from 70s to ~20s. The rollout drove ~20% growth in online wholesale transaction volume, significant infrastructure and operating cost savings, and faster, lower‑cost expansion into emerging markets.
