Rhode Island’s OSHEAN, Inc. is on guard with Akamai’s Prolexic to mitigate massive volumetric DDoS attacks

OSHEAN, Inc. is Rhode Island’s non-profit research and education network providing fiber and IP services to about 160 member institutions. It was facing a rising tide of volumetric DDoS attacks—often one to two per day and heavily targeting K–12 and higher education—that overwhelmed member sites, threatened OSHEAN’s 10–100 Gbps backbone, and forced staff into unsustainable, manual “black hole” mitigations that caused outages.

OSHEAN deployed Akamai Prolexic via its NoX peering, completing implementation in 15 days and integrating Prolexic with its in-house detection and routing to automate detection, rerouting and scrubbing under Akamai’s 24/7 SOCC. The solution automatically mitigated 224 attacks (Jan–Jul 2018), including an 18 Gbps/1.8 Mpps memcached assault, eliminated manual incident handling, ensured member uptime, and added a scalable DDoS protection service to OSHEAN’s portfolio.
