MTV Oy Stops Professional Attack in its Tracks Using Akamai’s Security Solution

MTV Oy (MTV3), Finland’s leading commercial broadcaster and operator of a high-traffic OTT service, was hit in summer 2013 by a professional, week-long DDoS attack that knocked its streaming site offline and prompted a bitcoin ransom demand. A temporary fix that blocked non-Finnish traffic stopped the attack but also prevented some legitimate users from connecting, so MTV needed a fast, precise solution that would stop the attack while allowing legitimate traffic.

MTV deployed Akamai Kona Site Defender—combining automated DDoS mitigation and a scalable web application firewall—which stopped the attack, restored service to all customers, and provided ongoing protection against content theft and other attacks. The solution reduced security overhead, strengthened application-layer defenses, and quickly paid for itself by preventing costly outages and restoring customer confidence.
