lifeIMAGE is a patient-centered network management company that simplifies the exchange of medical images and related clinical information across institutions, working with more than 1,400 U.S. hospitals and over 500,000 clinical touch points. Their solution relies on transmitting large, uncompressible DICOM image sets (800–8,000 images per exam, 500KB–15GB) so clinicians can avoid duplicate exams and make timely decisions; however, latency and availability issues in a transactional system introduced risk, and a traditional data-center expansion would have been costly and difficult to scale.

To address this, lifeIMAGE implemented Akamai’s Intelligent Platform and IP Application Accelerator to bring DICOM images closer to clinicians via edge servers, improving reliability and reducing latency without heavy CAPEX. The cloud delivery approach provided the scalability needed for growth, increased accessibility of clinical information, and delivered up to a 14% improvement in DICOM transaction times, helping reduce costs and maximize patient care.
