A Akamai Technologies Case Study
Carbon60 Networks, a Toronto-based managed cloud hosting provider with a track record of supporting large events, was selected to host the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games website. The challenge was to deliver fast, global access for massive, record-breaking traffic (exceeding previous Olympic site traffic expectations) while preventing daily, targeted web attacks that could take the site offline and damage the city’s reputation.
Carbon60 integrated Akamai services (Dynamic Site Accelerator, Web Application Firewall, NetStorage) with a multi‑origin, multi‑data‑center architecture, automatic failover and 24/7 monitoring. The solution offloaded the majority of traffic (about 87% for the Pan Am and 69% for the Parapan), supported peaks of 22,000 requests/sec, served over 1 billion visitors and 8+ billion page requests, maintained sub‑2‑second global response times, reduced server load by 87% and significantly cut infrastructure and data costs while thwarting daily attacks.
