How Data Stack Modernization is Helping Kroo Bank Secure its Challenger Status

Kroo Bank, one of the UK’s leading digital-only challenger banks, needed to modernize its data stack as customer growth drove rapidly rising transaction and data volumes. Its self-managed Kafka setup was nearing storage limits, and the team also needed a more scalable, regulator-friendly approach to disaster recovery and future multi-cloud expansion. To support this, Kroo Bank partnered with Aiven and Aiven for Apache Kafka.

Aiven helped Kroo Bank move from self-managed Kafka to a managed Kafka service, simplifying operations and letting the team focus more on product development. Kroo Bank optimized the platform with defaults and Zstandard compression, while keeping close alignment with the open-source Kafka ecosystem. The result was better scalability, easier maintenance, and stronger support for growth; Kroo also plans to use Aiven’s tiered storage to extend retention policies and reduce costs, while preparing for more real-time streaming use cases.
