A Airthings Case Study
West Yorkshire Schools, a group of five local schools in Calderdale, faced the challenge of poor indoor air quality in their older, poorly ventilated buildings. This was affecting the health and productivity of students and teachers, with high CO2 levels causing issues like drowsiness and being linked to virus transmission. The schools lacked a clear solution and a way to measure results. To tackle this, they partnered with vendor Airthings to use their Space CO2 and Space Radon air quality monitors.
Airthings provided a solution by installing their air quality monitoring sensors and supporting an educational program. The results were clear: over 12 months, the sensors took over 9.2 million readings, revealing the schools spent 4,846 hours in a high CO2 "warning zone." The monitors provided real-time notifications to improve ventilation. This data-driven approach raised awareness and provided a blueprint for next steps, including optimizing HVAC systems and a planned second year focusing on PM2.5 levels with Airthings' Space Pro sensors.
