Case Study: GitHub scales community programs and cuts process time by 95% with Airtable

A Airtable Case Study

How GitHub scaled its community building with Airtable

GitHub, home to over 65 million developers, needed a way to scale its Developer Relations and Education programs—like GitHub Stars and Campus Experts—without building costly internal tools. Spreadsheets and manual processes couldn’t handle thousands of nominations, application reviews, NDA tracking, swag coordination, and website updates, so the team adopted Airtable (using Airtable bases, automations, and API integrations) to streamline workflows.

Using Airtable, GitHub built a single command center to capture nominations, surface data, run automations, and power dashboards and integrations. Airtable cut applicant review time from nearly four hours to 15 minutes (about a 95% reduction), enabled GitHub to absorb a 70% uptick in applicants without added headcount, saved roughly two hours per week on swag logistics, and eliminated the need for expensive bespoke tooling—all while improving visibility and program management.
