Rhapsody Finds Push Notifications 50 Times More Effective Than Banner Ads

Rhapsody, a music streaming service, partnered with BandPage and Urban Airship to better connect fans with their favorite artists and drive engagement, retention, and revenue. Their challenge was delivering the right offers to the right listeners—identifying "superfans" who would respond to artist-specific messages rather than relying on generic ads.

BandPage built an algorithm to segment superfans by listening behavior and Rhapsody used Urban Airship to send targeted push notifications with relevant offers (shows, merch, etc.). The campaigns produced a click-through rate 50× higher than banner ads (also outperforming Facebook and Google paid search) and increased user engagement and retention by 50%; the partners now plan to expand into ticketing and other artist-driven offers.
