Redbox Makes Rentals a Breeze, Engages and Rewards Users

Redbox, the U.S. leader in new-release movie and game rentals with more than 35,000 kiosks and 30 million app downloads, needed a way to educate and onboard new users, cross-promote content across channels, and give customers quick access to kiosk locations and inventory to drive habitual engagement.

Using Urban Airship’s mobile marketing automation, Redbox implemented timed push and in‑app messages (including a welcome push that delivers a free rental code within an hour and requires account sign-up), deep links to content and social channels, a message center with transactional receipts and expiring offers, and multi‑channel outreach (SMS and email). The program produced big gains: the welcome offer saw a 300% higher redemption rate, the first push drove 16x normal online traffic, welcome messages had 33% higher open rates, 83% of app users opt into push, and mobile engagement proved more valuable and consistent than other channels.
