Reliance Industries Limited Optimizes its Crude Supply Chain with AIMMS-based Tool

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), operator of the world’s largest single-location refinery in Jamnagar with more than 1.2 million barrels per stream day capacity, faced a complex crude-planning challenge: processing heavy, high‑sulfur crudes to maximize margins required tightly integrated monthly planning and daily scheduling. Misalignment between planning, scheduling and operations risked margin leakage, VLCC demurrage and end‑of‑month stockpiles of hard‑to‑process crudes.

Working with Shell Global Solutions and ORTEC, RIL implemented GeCOS, an AIMMS‑based decision‑support system that models the refinery’s constraints, delivers practical daily optimized crude blends and lets planners modify or overrule recommendations. GeCOS reduced excess tank and marine storage, cut difficult crude stockpiles and purchases of complementary blending crudes, increased throughput and delivered higher margins and better asset utilization.
