Production Scheduling for a Leading Beer Manufacturer

One of the world’s largest beer brewers—with over 200 breweries and hundreds of global brands—sought to optimize production scheduling to maximize brewing-tank utilization and improve demand fulfillment. The challenge was highly complex: brewing involves many ingredients, long lead times and intricate yeast planning (including variable yeast requirements, reuse through yeast cropping, and long preparation times). Planners were scheduling manually at each brewery and needed a faster, more feasible and optimized solution.

ITC Infotech, using the AIMMS low-code optimization platform, developed a custom app that models tank capacity, fermentation and culture timings, yeast shelf-life and cropping opportunities, and other constraints, then generates optimized schedules in minutes via a mixed-integer program solved with CPLEX. The app also supports inventory decisions to ensure the right yeast is on hand and maximize reuse. The result: on-time demand fulfillment, higher resource utilization, reduced planning time and a stronger ability to handle planning complexity.
