Case Study: OnLocation optimizes renewable energy storage for the U.S. power grid with AIMMS REStore

A AIMMS Case Study

OnLocation optimizes renewable energy storage with AIMMS after solar grew 35-fold

OnLocation, an independent energy analysis firm, faced the challenge of optimizing the integration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind into the U.S. power grid. The inherent variability of these sources created a problem of matching supply with demand, necessitating a solution for energy storage to ensure grid reliability. To address this, they partnered with vendor AIMMS to develop the REStore optimization model.

Using AIMMS, OnLocation built the REStore model to determine the hourly dispatch and minimum-cost storage capacity requirements for the grid. This solution processes vast amounts of data to provide critical outputs on marginal electricity prices and storage operation, informing national energy planning and policy decisions. The model has become a critical tool for projections as renewable deployment increases, with potential future applications for optimizing electric vehicle charging and assessing flexible demand.
