MISO unlocks $2.2 billion in annual benefits with AIMMS

The Midcontinent Independent System Operator, Inc. (MISO) faced the challenge of managing one of the world's largest real-time energy markets, requiring a dynamic and robust system to balance energy generation and consumption across a massive region. They needed to improve reliability and maximize the efficiency of their power plants and transmission assets, a technological feat never before attempted on such a scale. To address this, MISO partnered with vendor AIMMS and GE Grid Solutions.

The solution involved GE Grid Solutions developing an energy market system using AIMMS for its powerful modeling capabilities to build, solve, and visualize large optimization models. This AIMMS-based system allowed MISO to efficiently dispatch power and manage the grid. The results were substantial, including improved reliability and more than $2.2 billion in annual benefits by 2014, with an estimated $6.1 to $8.1 billion in value achieved through 2020.
