A AIMMS Case Study
GE Grid Solutions, a GE–Alstom joint venture, partnered with the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (MISO) to tackle the unprecedented challenge of operating competitive energy markets across a region serving over 40 million end users. MISO needed a system that could continuously balance generation and consumption, dispatch diverse power plants, respect transmission capacity limits and robustness requirements, and manage ancillary services — all at a scale never before attempted.
The team implemented an AIMMS-based optimization platform to model, solve and visualize large-scale market-clearing problems, with AIMMS providing ongoing support; the system now accepts or rejects offers daily using these algorithms. The result was improved reliability, efficiency and transparency of plant and transmission operations, more than $2.2 billion in annual benefits in 2014, an estimated $6.1–$8.1 billion of value through 2020, and recognition with the 2011 Franz Edelman Award.
