AIMMS-based model optimizes planning for ProRail’s inspection trains

ProRail, the Dutch government organization that maintains the national rail network serving about 1 million passengers daily, needed to rethink inspection planning after adopting video inspection trains: inspections had to be thorough but use as little extra driving as possible to avoid interfering with regular services.

CQM developed an AIMMS-based optimization model and planning application that schedules and combines routes, predicts drive times, and uses powerful solvers to minimize time on track; the solution delivered multi‑dozen percentage‑point gains in planning efficiency, cost savings, reduced disruption to operations, and includes visualization and manual override for planners.
