Zaha Hadid Gallery partnered with Ai Build to explore how advanced digital fabrication could support an experimental furniture piece for the Meta Utopia Exhibition. The challenge was to turn a parametric design concept into a physically realized prototype that could deliver both visual impact and functional seating comfort.
Ai Build used free-form robotic 3D printing and a custom multi-material process to create the Puddle Chair, a lightweight sofa with a structurally optimized space frame and an artificial cloth-like surface. The result was a highly detailed prototype with ripple textures inspired by nature, offering a comfortable, massaging seating experience and demonstrating the potential of robotic 3D printing in parametric design.
