The customer, KraussMaffei, faced a resource-intensive and wasteful challenge in producing autoclavable tooling, which was traditionally CNC machined from metal. They partnered with vendor Ai Build to explore how large format additive manufacturing (LFAM) could offer a more sustainable solution, though this method came with its own issues like thermal management and warping.

Ai Build's solution utilized their software's Thermal Analysis tool to manage print temperatures and prevent failure, implemented continuous extrusion to eliminate warping, and employed staggered layering to increase part strength and reduce porosity. This approach allowed Ai Build and KraussMaffei to demonstrate a more sustainable and scalable method for producing high-quality, durable autoclave tooling.
