Streamlining Pavement Project Reviews Through Visualization Using AgileAssets® Pavement Analyst

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) needed a way to streamline pavement project reviews across one of the largest state-owned networks in the U.S. — managing over 50,000 lane miles and thousands of bridges and related assets. Working with the University of California Pavement Research Center, Caltrans faced the challenge of commissioning an automated visualization tool that could process large pavement datasets, meet exacting requirements, and integrate seamlessly with its existing AgileAssets® Pavement Analyst™ (PaveM) system to reveal gaps, overlaps, and relationships among recommended, programmed, and as‑built projects.

Caltrans and UCPRC developed H-Chart, a visualization tool integrated with Pavement Analyst and configured to ingest, map, and display large volumes of pavement data efficiently. H-Chart lets engineers visualize conditions and project relationships in one chart, speeding reviews, reducing staff time, improving project prioritization and selection, and clarifying treatments — benefits that made the implementation valuable for planning, field use, management briefings, and public education, and earned Caltrans recognition as an AXIAM nominee.
