Montana DOT Implements Award-Winning Safety Information Management System (SIMS) with AgileAssets® Safety Analyst

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) needed a more robust way to identify and address high-crash locations across its roughly 75,000 miles of urban, rural and local roadways after recording the nation’s highest fatality rate in 2013 (1.96 per 100 million vehicle miles). MDT’s existing in‑house tools required time-consuming manual data processing from multiple databases and could not support growing stakeholder demands for a more functional, integrated, and user‑friendly safety analysis system.

MDT implemented AgileAssets Safety Analyst and Foundation modules as the core of a new Safety Information Management System (SIMS), delivering a web-based platform with network screening, a MIRE framework, Safety Performance Functions, rich reporting and intuitive querying. The solution, which went live August 1, 2014, improved efficiency, accuracy and accessibility of safety analyses, enabled deeper project reviews and broader use across planning, maintenance and operations, and earned MDT a 2015 FHWA National Roadway Safety Award and a Montana Governor’s Award.
