Room & Board, a premium furniture retailer, wanted to offer an alternative, fair payment method that wouldn’t feel like predatory lending and that could help customers afford big-ticket purchases—especially during the pandemic when stores were closed. To meet that need they partnered with Affirm to provide pay-over-time options and, critically, 0% APR payment plans for customers facing financial strain.

Affirm’s interest-free financing became an “always on” option that boosted demand and attracted younger buyers: Affirm sales for Room & Board showed a 28% higher average order value, overall Affirm-driven sales were up 16% year-over-year (as of April 2022), and 91% of that volume used 0% APR plans; millennial take-up rose 45% and over 35% of Affirm sales were from new customers. Room & Board reports the program is self-sustaining, helps close a sales gap from store closures, and continues to enhance the customer experience.
