Motorola, a longtime pioneer in mobile communications, wanted to grow total sales by making its smartphones and accessories more accessible, but its private-label MotoCredit program (backed by Comenity) suffered from low approval rates. In 2016 Motorola began testing Affirm, a modern financing solution that considers data beyond FICO to extend responsible credit to more shoppers and help the company cast a wider customer net.
Affirm implemented advanced underwriting and transparent monthly-pricing options, and Motorola amplified the offer with up‑funnel messaging and “as‑low‑as” monthly pricing across product pages and marketing. The results were measurable: Affirm delivered 126% higher approval rates than industry averages, adoption rose from 7% in Q3 2016 to 14.7% in Q3 2017, and by August 2017 19% of all Motorola orders were financed with Affirm (up from 15% in July). Sixty percent of Affirm orders were for flagship devices, and Affirm’s +82 NPS signaled strong customer satisfaction.
