Case Study: Curse Inc. achieves 1M+ monthly active users and faster scaling for Curse Voice with Aerospike

A Aerospike Case Study

Preview of the Curse Inc. Case Study

Curse Voice Powered by Aerospike Scales to Over 1M Users

Curse Voice is a VoIP, messaging and friends-list app for gamers with over 2 million installs, more than 1 million monthly active users and millions of messages sent. During alpha deploys, the team found Apache Cassandra couldn’t scale reliably—clustering was slow and production response times suffered—so they needed a low-latency, highly scalable database to meet exploding customer demand.

Curse replaced Cassandra with Aerospike, running three two-node clusters on AWS r3.2xlarge instances with local SSDs and using Aerospike XDR to replicate across North America, Europe and Asia. The change delivered an order-of-magnitude performance improvement, reliable scaling beyond 1M active users (with a roadmap to 10M monthly users) and enabled new real-time features like friends lists and instant messaging with much better responsiveness.
