AdForm Divorces Cassandra Scales Performance by 4x with 2x Fewer Servers

AdForm is a fast-growing European ad-technology company running rich media, real-time bidding and ad-serving on a Microsoft stack. When building DSP and DMP functionality they needed a NoSQL user-profile and id-mapping store that could deliver multiple reads/writes within 50 ms, but Cassandra required constant tuning, proved unstable under changing workloads, and could not be scaled easily to meet a 4x growth target without ballooning cluster size.

AdForm evaluated Aerospike, ran a brief POC that became production in a week, and replaced a 32-node Cassandra cluster with 3-node Aerospike clusters in each of two data centers. The new setup manages 1 TB on Intel SSDs and sustains about 120k reads/sec and 8k writes/sec with 200k TPS peaks, delivering lower costs, much faster key-value performance and predictable responsiveness.
